Skanska, which signed the main works contract with National Highways three years ago, can now press ahead with detailed design before starting construction next year.
The scheme covers 6.6km between Farndon and Winthorpe junctions. Most of the existing road will be widened, while a new offline section east of the A1 will cut out one of the region’s worst traffic bottlenecks.

The project will provide two lanes in each direction, improving capacity on a key Midlands freight corridor linking the M1, Leicester, the A1 and central Lincolnshire.
National Highways said the bypass upgrade will ease congestion for the 60,000 vehicles using the route daily and deliver a more reliable and resilient connection.
